The Curl Whisperer on Protein: Friend or Foe?

I found this article very interesting and true.  It took me a while to figure out why certain products would make Baby Girl S's hair either dry, hard or tangled.  After investigating, by testing various products with and without protein (protein comes in various forms of course) I learned that Baby Girl S's hair is sensitive to protein. I try to stay away from products with protein as much as possible for Baby Girl S.  However, Baby Girl M's hair loves protein as they have two different hair types.  One of my favorite brands (Shea Moisture) has protein in some of the products I use and unfortunately I had to stop using them on Baby Girl S's hair but continue to use on Baby Girl M with no problems.

So I would love suggestions on good styling hair milks without protein...

*Update: Just ordered Darcy's Botanicals NEW Sweet Cocoa Bean Curl Smoothing Cream (Product Review to Come)  This product did not do much for BG "S" hair but works well in BG "M" hair, then again anything does.  Still in search of a good hair milk for BG "S".  I will be trying the Oyin Hair Dew soon.

Enjoy the article.

  1. Great article! My oldest one's hair is always dry and course no matter what natural styling aid I've tried. I need suggestions too! Also do you have any recommendations for detangling conditioners?I still haven't found a good one for her..

    1. Thanks! Both the girls have completely different hair textures, so of course I buy different products for each. Are you looking to detangle with a leave-in conditioner or rinse-out? Are you ingredient conscience? Have you tried to eliminate the products with protein to see if you get different results? Do you have a current regimen? My youngest have the dry and coarse hair and I have finally created a regimen that works for her (post coming soon).

  2. I'm pretty new to this. Honestly I'm not ingredient conscience at all. I'm really just a product junkie! I see natural product and a buy and try lol. Terrible! I guess momma needs to sit and do some research for real! Where do I begin....I'll check out the reviews you've done so far.

    1. I definitely understand PJ'ism, I'm recovering, lol. That's not terrible, it is just a matter of learning what works for you. But for cost sake, you may want to see if sample sizes are available before purchasing especially if you can't return or exchange. I have a preference to avoid products that may contain parabens, silicones, sulfates, petroleum and mineral oil. This preference is also based on who's hair I will use the product on. So, I'm not saying I won't try a product with these ingredients, I just have to do a lot of considering. I have so many product reviews to post...hopefully it helps!
