Happy Curls

Keeping my Girls Curls Happy...

  • Detangle -  Section the hair (smaller sections work best) and begin detangling from the bottom up.  I prefer to detangle my girls curls while wet with a detangling comb during conditioning or during the pre-poo session.  Detangling makes the hair much more manageable.  If detangling dry hair, make sure the hair is lubricated with an oil before combing or spritz with water.
  • Wear a satin cap or scarf -  Wearing a satin cap or scarf helps retain the moisture in the hair and prevents breakage by minimizing friction (tossing and turning) while sleeping.
  • Moisturize - Keeping your girls curls moisturized prevents the hair from becoming dry and then breaking.  It is also much easier for you to manipulate the hair without breakage when moisturized.  Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize. This is very important to maintain healthy natural hair.
  • Limit Heat (i.e-Blow Drying, Flat Ironing) - Too much heat can cause breakage and revert the hair from its natural curl pattern.  I do not apply heat to my daughters' hair.  I let the hair air dry after styling while wet.  If you don't want to style the hair right away, try putting the hair in several braids or use the banding method to stretch the hair for a future style.  Chocolate Hair Vanilla Care does a great job at explaining the banding method.
  • Learn the Ingredients: Read Labels - All ingredients work differently on various types of hair.  Some ingredients make the hair dry and brittle, while others make the hair flourish.  Learn what works for your girls curls.  We choose to stay away from certain products.
  • Eat Healthy - To ensure healthy hair, have your kids drink plenty of water, eat plenty of fruits, veggies and lean proteins.
